It’s one thing to refuse paying your staff what they are due in order to survive because regulations have not yet been put in place, but quite another to disregard said regulations as is the situation with a number of Tower Hamlets schools. School cleaners and teaching assistants make far less than they need to make ends meet and it seems that the London Living Wage exists only as a prescription. An usual full-time position earns the worker a daily rate of as little as £50.
The problem with proper payment rates has been brought to the council and for once, the situation might resolve without a strike. Mayor Rahman has promised his support of the workforce and will discuss the payment situation with the offending schools. Rahman has expressed his disappointment at those, who haven’t yet adopted the practice, which he regards as key to create a better society.
